Year 2002 JUNE 11 FULL DAY FUND RAISER RESEARCH TRIP

Looking for an adventure? Why not join the Center for Oceanic Research and Education (CORE) on a full-day fundraiser research trip? This year, CORE has a fundraiser trip scheduled for June 11th. In conjunction with Captain Greg Mercurio of the Yankee Capts, this trip departs at 5am on June 11th from Yankee Whale Watching, Gloucester, MA, returning at 5pm. Captain Greg has generously agreed to donate 100% of the proceeds for this trip directly to CORE.

Trips like these allow CORE researchers to conduct an intensive survey of the whales and birds off the coast of New England. These trips may find us anywhere from the coast of Maine to Cape Cod Bay, and will allow us extra time to reach areas much further offshore that are impossible to visit during a regular half-day trip. As there are several potential areas to investigate, we will focus on sites reported to have the highest concentration of whales and/or activity. Additionally, a full day trip allows more time to observe the whales that are encountered.

CORE will have at least two research staff and guest scientists on board to provide narration on the various cetacean and bird species that are sighted, while being readily available for any questions you may have. If time allows, we hope to utilize our hydroplane, allowing us to hear the vocalizations of the whales, as well as our plankton net to view the microscopic plant and animal life in the water column. We will also be testing out some of our new research toys, such as a secchi disk and a deep-water thermometer.

The cost for this full-day adventure is only $75, which includes a light breakfast, lunch and beverages. A $30 deposit is required to reserve your space. To insure your comfort, the number of passengers will be limited.

To register, or for further information, please call 1-800-WHALING (1-800-942-5464). If you would like to speak to a CORE research staff member directly, please call the CORE office, (978) 768-4560, to leave a message, and someone will return your call as soon as possible.
