Activities, content, and materials are consistent with elements of the National and
Massachusetts Standards for and Science. Participation in the course is open to
undergraduates with the approval of the instructor.
When: July 13 – 16, 2003
Course Costs: $775 ($475 boat expenses plus $300 for course fee and 25
PDP’s) or
$475 boat expenses plus $580 for 1 graduate credit or $1010 for 2 graduate
credits.
The graduate credits depend on selection of final product.
Course Description:
Participants will learn: introductory
information on marine biology; geology and submarine canyon formation; whale and bird
species recognition & migrations; food chain and biological systems; and, individual
whale identification techniques. Chart use, course plotting, navigation, bathymetry,
warm-core rings and other effects of the Gulf Stream on this unique area of ocean will be
covered. Additionally, a bird expert will be on board to assist with sightings and offer
his expertise in the recognition and habits of the many different bird species observed. .
Students will spend Sunday through Wednesday participating in established research
program, the 3 days will be aboard a 100 ft. U.S. Coast Guard approved vessel travel to
the edge of the continental shelf to the Hydrographers Canyon area. The educational
program is conducted in conjunction with The Center for Oceanic Research and Education and
Yankee Whale Watching three day research expedition, Gloucester, Mass. |

Students will:
Complete research activities on board relating to water properties, plankton tows and
identification, marine mammal and sea bird observation and identification.
Participate in a 3-day research project, and
Discuss and plan educational units based on the information, activities and
observations experienced on the cruise.
The fee for this three-day expedition is $775.00 ($475.00 plus $300 tuition and course
fees) for Professional Development Points. All meals are included in the fare, with snacks
and non-alcoholic beverages provided. Food may be brought on board for those with special
dietary requirements. We will remain offshore from July 14th to July 16th and will return
to port the evening of the 16th, around 6p.m. For
